Moisture is something that collects in the air, and can often be extremely irritating for many different people. But what effects does moisture have on plant stock, more specifically grain stores and crop?
What causes moisture, and what problems can it cause?
Moisture is, at a basic level, a higher concentration of water in the air than usual, which makes it hard to escape. It usually occurs after a long night of rainfall, or rain for an extended period. The moisture in the air can then settle on everything, from tree stumps to cars, to stores of grain which you’ve carefully cultivated and left to sit in a secure building. The grain seeds themselves can become damaged and unusable for human consumption.
So what happens to the grain stores?
The effects that moisture can have on the grain stores will depend upon the level of moisture which has settled on the grain seeds. At levels higher than 12% of moisture, it is advised you don’t consume the grain, because it will almost certainly have diseases on it. The first type of bacteria that will grow on the grain is certain types of fungal spores, which grow from moisture levels as little as 14%. The higher levels of moisture that grow on the grain, the more fungal spores will begin to form, with anaerobic bacteria forming once the levels of moisture have reached 20% or higher. At that point, the grain is unsafe to consume and will most likely need to be destroyed.
Moisture that builds up and settles on the grain stores that you’ve managed to cultivate will often be extremely damaging to the stock, and can cause the build-up of spores and diseases, all of which are harmful for human consumption, so it’s important to be careful when it comes to preserving your grain, as so to avoid any of these scenarios happening.
